Distance Learning Instructor for Basic Course in Sanskrit. Shaastrii, born near Stuttgart, Germany, earned his Ph.D in analytical chemistry from the University of Köln in 1967. His second graduate degree is in Indo-European philology and linguistics from the University of Antwerp (1986). His research assignments over a period of thirty years were in medical research (cancer, antioxidants, free radical quenching, nutrition and environmental pollution analysis). In addition to facilitating students in Hindu University's computer-based introductory Sanskrit course, he has two appointments at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia – adjunct professor in the Middle Eastern Studies Department and computer support specialist for the university's faculty and staff. In what is both his part-time vocation and avocation (Sanskrit instruction), he has written a classroom text for beginners – Mama Prathama SaMskR^ita Pustakam (My First Sanskrit Book) and used it as a classroom tool to teach Sanskrit at Emory University. His current project is a multilingual (French-German-English) translation of SaayaNa's R^igVedabhaashhyam. His Indian wife, Rani, is a homemaker and their son, Raj, is a computer networking engineer.
