Pranayama, often interpreted as breath control, more accurately refers to the importance of prana (the root word) which means life-force, that very energy which supports breath and therefore life itself. The other part of the word ayama refers to expansion or extension of breath.

The Pranayama sessions are intended to guide participants in a practical way to develop awareness of, as well as to learn to control and regulate breath in order to internalize awareness, quiet the mental activity and deepen meditation practices. Attention is drawn to using breath to deepen relaxation and for improving health.
