WAVES 2026: Living Wisdom, Shared Scholarship, and a Renewed Vision for Ayurveda

The 17th International Conference of WAVES International and the 30th India Conference of WAVES brought together scholars, educators, clinicians, researchers, and practitioners for three meaningful days at Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa. Held from July 31 through August 2, 2026, in collaboration with Hindu University of America, the conference centered on the timely theme, “Living Wisdom: Reintegrating Ayurveda and Vedic Sciences in the Modern World.”

The success of WAVES 2026 was evident in the intellectual breadth of the program, the diversity of speakers, and the spirit of respectful dialogue that connected classical wisdom with contemporary questions. Sessions explored Ayurveda, consciousness, artificial intelligence, psychology, education, Sanskrit, Vedic science, architecture, health, research, leadership, and cultural continuity. Rather than treating these as isolated subjects, the conference demonstrated how they form an interconnected knowledge ecosystem with continuing relevance to humanity.

For Hindu University of America and the California College of Ayurveda, the conference offered an important opportunity to contribute to this larger conversation. HUA’s participation reflected its commitment to preserving authentic knowledge traditions while encouraging interdisciplinary scholarship, modern education, and thoughtful engagement with the challenges of our time.

HUA President Shri Kalyan Viswanathan participated prominently throughout the conference. He served as a Guest of Honor during the inaugural session, later delivered a Plenary presentation, “From the Veda to Contemporary Hinduism: Continuity and Discontinuity,” and addressed the Valedictory Session as Chief Guest. His participation highlighted HUA’s role in creating academic pathways through which the depth, diversity, and continuity of Hindu knowledge systems can be understood and communicated responsibly.

It was my privilege to participate in the panel, “Living Wisdom Through Time: Ayurveda’s Past, Present, and Road Ahead.” The discussion examined Ayurveda’s historical foundations, its growing presence in the West, the role of graduates and practitioners, and the opportunities and responsibilities created by emerging technologies. We reflected on how artificial intelligence can support education, research, clinical documentation, global accessibility, and personalized wellness—while affirming that technology must remain guided by trained practitioners, ethical judgment, cultural authenticity, and compassion. I was also honored to chair one of the Plenary Keynote, which brought together three complementary perspectives. Dr. Anil Maheshwari spoke on “Blissful Living Made Accessible,” Shri Kalyan Viswanathan addressed continuity and discontinuity from the Veda to contemporary Hinduism, and Dr. Marc Halpern presented “Living Ayurveda: A Healing Journey.” Together, these presentations connected inner well-being, civilizational continuity, and the lived practice of Ayurveda.

CCA Founder Dr. Marc Halpern’s presentation was especially meaningful. Drawing on decades of experience as a pioneer of Ayurveda education in the United States, he reminded participants that Ayurveda is not merely a medical system to be studied—it is a way of understanding life, healing, purpose, and the relationship between the individual and nature.

HUA faculty made several additional contributions. Dr. Raj Vedam delivered the evening keynote, “Culture as a Knowledge Continuum: A Civilizational Framework for Understanding Indian Culture,” and later presented “Rejecting Eurocentrism: Reclaiming India’s Place in the Global Knowledge Continuum.” His presentations invited participants to question inherited historical frameworks and recognize India as a continuing source of sophisticated knowledge.

Dr. Kalika Uttarkar, HUA’s Director of Community Education, presented a comparative study of modern needs-based psychological models and the Upanishadic paradigm of innate wholeness, Pūrṇatva and Ānanda. Her work offered a valuable bridge between contemporary psychology and the deeper Vedic understanding of human fulfillment. Dr. Ram Mohan Rao, Faculty at HUA and CCA, played an important role in reviewing numerous paper submissions and supporting the conference’s academic quality. Dr. Rakesh Ranjan, an HUA student, Psychiatrist, and Clinical researcher, presented “From Brahman to Algorithms: A Vedic Ontology for Cosmic, Human, and Artificial Intelligence,” exploring intelligence through Vedic and contemporary frameworks.

A special appreciation must be extended to HUA Faculty Vaidya Vandana Baranwal, Convenor of the 17th International WAVES Conference. Her leadership was visible across the entire program. She co-moderated the inaugural session, chaired the session on reintegrating authentic Ayurveda, participated in the panel on women’s strengths, presented on the conservation and sustainable utilization of Ayurvedic medicinal resources, chaired the panel on Ayurveda’s past, present, and road ahead, and joined in delivering the Vote of Thanks at the valedictory session.

Organizing an international conference of this scale requires vision, persistence, coordination, and service. Vandana ji and the entire WAVES team deserve our heartfelt gratitude for creating a platform where traditional knowledge was treated not as a relic of the past, but as a living resource for education, healthcare, scholarship, and human flourishing. Special thanks to Maharishi International University (MIU) for being an exceptional host. Its beautiful, inspiring campus, excellent facilities, and peaceful atmosphere provided the perfect setting for learning, reflection, and meaningful connection.

Heartfelt appreciation to Shri Shashi Kejriwal ji, President of WAVES International, and the entire WAVES team for organizing an inspiring and highly successful conference. Their vision, dedication, and meticulous coordination created a meaningful global platform for scholarship, dialogue, and collaboration across Ayurveda and Vedic sciences. We also gratefully acknowledge the mentorship, guidance, and intellectual leadership of Dr. Balram Singh, whose continued support helped shape the depth and direction of the conference. Their collective efforts made WAVES 2026 a memorable and impactful gathering.

WAVES 2026 succeeded because it brought people and disciplines together. It honored the past, engaged the present, and encouraged us to shape the future with both courage and responsibility. HUA and CCA were proud to participate, and we look forward to building upon the relationships, ideas, and collaborative possibilities that emerged from this important gathering.
