It is an exemplary text of the Bhakti movement in India, written in the Awadhi language, which has variously been heralded as “the living sum of Indian culture”, and the greatest book of all devotional literature.”

Description

Course Content:
The Ramcharitmanas also called as Tulsi Krit Ramayana of Goswami Tulsidas (c. 1532-1623) is a sixteenth century retelling of the Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana of Valmiki. The Ramcharitmanas inspired and shaped the spiritual, ethical, and moral worldview of the people of India and its diaspora through its textual, oral, performative, and folk traditions. The Ramcharitmanas is the sole guide for living for millions around the world who receive it as a Shastra. It has served as a survival text for the poor and oppressed during invasions and colonization and continues to inspire Hindu cultural and civilizational sustenance today.

Course Learning Objectives:
In this Course, Students will be able to:
1. Develop awareness of the Ramcharitmanas as a bhakti shastra.
2. Appreciate the text through its living traditions, literary, performing and philosophical.
3. Integrate the text’s guidance for living offered to different audiences.
4. Distinguish the adhyatmik, adhidaivika and adhibhautika levels in the text.
5. Learn through sharing and collaboration.

Class Structure
There will be a minimum of 1.5 contact hours with one or more faculty every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week.
