Conversion Formula

The ratio between quarter credit hours and semester credit hours is 1: 1.5. The following table compares equivalent credits in both systems for 1, 2, and 3 credit hour courses:

System Type Course Parameter 1 Credit Hr 2 Credit Hr 3 Credit Hr
Quarter System Number of Hours of Classroom Instruction 10 20 30
Number of hours of Self-study & Assignments 20 40 60
Total Quantity of Work per Course per Quarter 30 60 90
Semester System Number of Hours of Classroom Instruction 15 30 45
Number of hours of Self-study & Assignments 30 60 90
Total Quantity of Work per Course per Quarter 45 90 135

As shown in the table above, this creates a 1 to 1.5 ratio between Semester Credit Hours and Quarter Credit Hours. For example, a person who has earned 10 Semester Credit-Hours has earned the equivalent of 15 Quarter Credit Hours. Conversely, a student who has earned 30 Quarter Credit Hours has in fact earned only 20 Semester-Credit Hours. This formula will be used in all Credit Transfer decisions.

Most courses offered by Hindu University of America follow the Quarter system. However, there are exceptions for some courses, which are offered by one of HUA’s affiliates, which may follow a Semester system. In each case, the Credit Hours earned will be converted according to the table shown above.
