About Our Unique Retreat
Hindu University of America invites all to join a spiritually uplifting celebration of the Devī in all her facets. An immersive four-day retreat from August 29, 2025 to September 1, 2025, this in-person retreat will be held in the sylvan surroundings of the University campus at the Pine Lake Retreat in Orlando, Florida, USA.
The Vedas declare that Īśvara’s Śakti (power) is innate and produces different effects. This Śakti is termed Parā-śakti in Saṃskṛtam. ‘Parāsya śaktiḥ vividhaiva śrūyate’. Parā-śakti manifests as icchā (desire), jñāna (knowledge), and kriyā (action). As icchā-śakti, She is Lakṣmī. As jñāna-śakti, She is Sarasvatī, and as kriyā-śakti, She is Umā Gaurī.
To experience all these aspects, we will explore the Vedas, Upaniṣads, stotras, Purāṇas, mūrtilakṣaṇa (iconography), saṅgīta (music), tīrthas (sacred sites), and their sthala-purāṇas (legends).

Special Evening Sessions
EXPERIENCING DEVĪ THROUGH MUSIC – Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran
Music is regarded as a mokṣa mārgam in the Hindu dhārmika traditions. Devī is revered as the very embodiment of music. Several composers and poets have expressed their devotion to Devī over the years through their words and music.
An experiential understanding of some of these works transports devotees to a different level of consciousness.
‘Experiencing Devī through Music’ is a workshop that takes participants on a musical experiential journey through works on Devī. Conducted by internationally renowned composer, music educator, and scholar Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran, the evening sessions offered during the Experiencing Devī retreat will take participants on a journey through time, space, and music.
Participants will engage with compositions such as:
- Short gītams, kīrtans, and bhajans on Sarasvatī, Lakṣmī, and Durgā
- Nottusvara sāhityas of Dīkṣitar on Sarasvatī, Lakṣmī, and Durgā
- Short kṛtis
- Musical experience of Ādi Śaṅkara’s ślokas
- Folk songs on Devī
Participants will understand the history and significance of these compositions and participate in the sing-along experience. These evening sessions and two post-lunch sessions will perfectly complement the day-long explorations on Devī.
Note: The content and sessions will be coordinated for optimal synergy.
No prior training in Karnāṭaka or Hindustānī music is required. What is needed is a healthy interest in music and a willingness to explore Devī through music.
