The Dharma of Global Sustainability

CPS2001 - This course explores how ancient Vedic wisdom, rooted in Hindu Dharma, offers vital insights for addressing today’s urgent environmental crises. Based on the book Carbon Dharma: The Occupation of Butterflies, it engages students in a journey of personal and planetary transformation through the lens of dharmic values. Each session reflects on topics such as karma, right action, the Bhagavad Gītā, and the metaphor of metamorphosis to distinguish between destructive (“Caterpillar”) and regenerative (“Butterfly”) cultures. Designed for today’s youth—and those who care about them—this course calls for collective responsibility in shaping a sustainable future. It invites students to become "Climate Healers," guided by inner transformation and a shared commitment to a thriving natural world.

The Yoga of Global Transformation

CPS2002 - This course explores how humanity can meet the ever-pressing challenge of global sustainability through a new form of collective Yoga—a conscious, cooperative path toward regeneration rather than depletion. It examines how we can support one another in this modern Kurukṣetra, reimagining our systems, values, and collective "games" to fulfill our needs while honoring planetary limits. Drawing on the Hindu axiom “Everything happens for the best,” the course invites participants to reflect on how past human actions, driven by selfishness and disconnection, have led to ecological degradation and social injustice. Through themes from Carbon Yoga: The Vegan Metamorphosis, students will examine identity, purpose, and the sacredness of all life as they chart a path toward inner transformation and moral clarity.

Sustainability is Sanatana Dharma

CPS2003 - This course explores how the modern quest for sustainability relates to the eternal search for morality and universal truths in Sanatana Dharma. It exposes two axiomatic flaws in our global industrial civilization that prevents humanity from contributing more to the ecosystems of the planet than extracting from them. As James Lovelock said, “If the earth improves as a result of human presence, we will flourish. If it does not, we will perish.” Therefore, creating a sustainable civilization requires aligning and implementing real world systems to facilitate our eternal search for inner peace (Chitta Vritti Nirodha) and the unity of all life (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam).
