Dr. Sree Sreenath

Sree N. Sreenath, Ph.D., MBA (Nonprofit), is a tenured full professor in the Electrical, Computer & Systems Engineering Department at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.

He has served as the Director of Case GEMNI (Graduate Engineering & Management National and International) Program. His research and educational interests are in complexity, with applications in Systems Biology (leukemia, prostate cancer and hydrocephalus), Global Issues, and, Sustainable Development. He served the Co-Director of UNESCO GENIe Program – an international network of educational institutions (1996-2006), and as the Director of the Complex Systems Biology Center (2007-2016) at Case. He consults with many developing countries on issues of water, energy, and policy. 

He has received many scholarships and awards including the Best Undergraduate Teaching Award, Who’s Who Among Teachers in America, and the NIH Research Career Award. He published a technical treatise on Global Warming in 1990 and was a member of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the 1990’s. He served as a scenario panel member of the World Water Commission (1998-2000); a member on the UN World Water Assessment Program; and many National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) committees. He has lectured in 25 countries, and has organized more than 40 workshops, symposia, and conferences.

Sreenath is the Founder President of the new Vivekananda Yoga University (VaYU), Los Angeles, CA, the World’s first Yoga University outside of India focusing on Graduate Education and Research. Sreenath and his team guided the onerous seven-year nonprofit registration and California state licensing process for VaYU. Holistic, traditional, evidence-based Yoga grounded on scientific principles is the highlight of VaYU programs Beginning Fall 2020, VaYU offers its debut Online MS (Yoga)– a 4-semester (21 month), low residency program.

Outside of higher education, Sreenath is active in the social service field. He was the President of Sewa International (www.sewausa.org), a Hindu faith-based charitable nonprofit working in the areas of disaster recovery, education, and, development. During his tenure 2009 to 2020, Sewa was able to increase the revenue 25 times to $8.3 million in 2019. Sewa proved that (i) an untested brand such as “Hindu faith-based nonprofit’ can thrive; (ii) the entire middle and upper management from Directors, VPs; Executive-VP and President can be geographically distributed dedicated volunteers spread across the US; (iii) a national nonprofit need not need to have a headquarters. In addition, his team developed a number of effective development projects such as: ‘Sponsor a Child,’ ASPIRE, LEAD, and ‘Toilet for the Girl Child;’ extended Sewa projects to Bangladesh, the Caribbean (Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, and Guyana), Columbia, Iraq, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka; and, strengthened all business systems, putting in functional and financial controls.

Sewa further saw increase in all possible premier nonprofit ratings:  Charity Navigator maximum 4-Star rating and perfect scores in “Accountability & Transparency” and “Financial Health” categories, and,  “10 Highly Rated Charities Relying on Private Contributions”; Great Nonprofits – Platinum; Better Business Bureau; and GuideStar – Seal of Transparency

Sreenath was inducted into the 2019 Class of the Cleveland International Hall of Fame.

Professor Sreenath is a practitioner of Vedic Math – ancient Indian Math for over 30 years and has developed a curriculum to educate children. He lives with his wife Shobha, and cat Mowgli in Solon, Ohio, and, has two adult children Apurwa (married to David) and Abhijit.
