Vimal Patel

Dr. Vimal Patel received his Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis in 1969. He was the recipient of the National Institute of Health Fellowship in Neuropathology from 1970 through 1974. He has also qualified as an Ayurveda Ratna, from the Allahabad University, in 1996 where he studied under practicing Ayurvedic Physicians.

Dr. Vimal Patel was an Associate Professor of Neuropathology (Retired) at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he served as Director of Neurochemistry Diagnostic Laboratory at the Department of Pathology for 34 years, from 1970 to 2004. He also served as a Visiting Professor and Advisor to the President of Martin University in Indianapolis.

During his active career, he established the Indiana Institute of Integrative Medicine and served as its Director and President. He has also published a few papers in the field of experimental pathology, integrative medicine and performed pioneering research in Ayurvedic Rasayana. Dr. Vimal Patel was empaneled into the 21-member NIH Panel for evaluating integrative medicine centers, from 2000 to 2004, where he was responsible for disbursing over $ 130 Million to various centers.

In his more than 50 years of residence in Indianapolis, he has been involved in the establishment of several social and religious organizations, catering to the Hindu community and culture. Dr. Vimal Patel is a founding member of India Community Center, the Geeta Mandal of Indianapolis and its Balagokulam, a past director of Vishwa Hindu Parishad America, a Founding member of the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana, Hindu American Vanaprasthi Network (HAVAN), a Board member of Center for Interfaith Cooperation (CIC) in Indianapolis. In his post-retirement period, he is actively engaged in Interfaith dialogues representing Hindu Dharma with many different organizations, including schools and churches.
