Dr. Vimal Patel holds a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis (1969), and completed a prestigious NIH Fellowship in Neuropathology (1970–1974). He later earned the qualification of Ayurveda Ratna from Allahabad University in 1996 under the guidance of practicing Ayurvedic physicians. At HUA he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees.
Dr. Patel had a distinguished academic and research career as Associate Professor of Neuropathology at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he also directed the Neurochemistry Diagnostic Laboratory for 34 years (1970–2004). He served as Visiting Professor and Advisor to the President of Martin University and established the Indiana Institute of Integrative Medicine, where he served as Director and President. His scholarly contributions include research in experimental pathology, integrative medicine, and pioneering studies in Ayurvedic Rasayana.
From 2000 to 2004, Dr. Patel served on the NIH’s elite 21-member panel evaluating integrative medicine centers, helping to allocate more than $130 million in federal funding.
For over five decades in Indianapolis, Dr. Patel has played a key role in nurturing Hindu community institutions. He is a founding member of the India Community Center, the Geeta Mandal of Indianapolis and its Balagokulam, the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana, and the Hindu American Vanaprasthi Network (HAVAN). He is a past Director of Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America and currently serves on the Board of the Center for Interfaith Cooperation (CIC). In retirement, he remains deeply engaged in interfaith dialogue, representing Hindu Dharma in diverse civic, educational, and religious forums.
