The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

HSF6005 - (MA/DHS/PHD) – Core for MA in Hindu Studies and Elective for DHS) The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali represent a foundational philosophical text for the study of classical Yoga. Although Yoga has achieved widespread global recognition, its original metaphysical, ethical, and soteriological dimensions have often been diminished in contemporary practice. This graduate-level course critically examines Yoga beyond its external disciplines (bahiraṅga yoga), focusing on Patañjali’s extensive treatment of inner practices (antaraṅga yoga) and the transcendence of conditioned selfhood toward realization of the higher Self (parama antaraṅga yoga). Rooted in the Sāṅkhya darśana, the course establishes a rigorous philosophical framework for interpreting Yoga and provides essential preparation for advanced study of related texts, including the Bhagavad Gītā.

The Yoga of Mahabharata

YOG3100 – This course is designed to use the itihasa-purana Mahabharata as a mirror to discover oneself. Key aspects of antaranga yoga (the process of introspection described in the Yoga Sutras) are exemplified through the Mahabharata stories. This enables us to gain a deep comprehension of our psyche and its patterns.

Antaranga Mandapam

YOG3101 – How is this Coronavirus pandemic going to end? Will we return to our 'old selves' and our 'familiar normal' after this pandemic, or will we transform ourselves in fundamental ways that we don't yet know? The answer lies in how we cope with and grow through the unique challenges created by this crisis. The Antaranga Mandapam Course introduces students to a "Healing Sangha", and is designed to enable them to come together into a contemplative space, where they learn to listen to themselves and each other, in a self-reflective way. In the Yoga tradition, contemplative dialog involves deep internalising of sakhibhAva i.e. listening with affection and friendliness and sakshibhAva i.e. meditative listening without judgement. In this course, students will create a safe and trusted community space, where they will deepen their sense of self-awareness and their ability to be open with one another. This will enable the students in the course to discover new ways of being and engaging with the oneself and the world, at a transformative moment, in our lives.
