HUA Saṃvāda New Jersey: Dialogue, Culture, and the Living Relevance of Hindu Studies

Following the deep community resonance of our gatherings in Los Angeles, Houston, and the Bay Area, the Hindu University of America brought its signature national dialogue to the East Coast. On Sunday, November 9, 2025, the Grand Ballroom at Royal Albert’s Palace in Fords, New Jersey, became a vibrant hub of intellectual inquiry, exquisite classical arts, and shared purpose.

The theme of the evening,“Hindu Studies: What’s in it for me?”,was not merely an academic question. It was a collective invitation to students, professionals, seekers, and families to explore how the profound, time-tested knowledge systems of Sanātana Dharma can actively elevate our contemporary lives, careers, and community structures.

An Intellectual Feast: Reclaiming the Narrative

At the heart of every HUA Saṃvāda is the commitment to high-caliber academic discourse that challenges mainstream assumptions and restores native perspectives. The New Jersey symposium brought some of HUA’s most distinguished faculty to the stage:

  • Mahābhārata Studies – Deconstructing the Western Lens:

Distinguished Indologist Dr. Vishwa Adluri and graduate faculty Dr. Joydeep Bagchee delivered a compelling, tag-team discourse on the Western adoption of the Mahābhārata. They illuminated the critical need for a native, hermeneutical approach to studying our epics, moving away from reductionist Western paradigms and returning to the text as a living, breathing guide to Dharma and human consciousness.

  • The Living Wisdom of the Upaniṣads:

Dr. Kalika Uttarkar, ourDirector of Community Education, and a scholar of Upaniṣads bridged the ancient and the modern, showcasing the immediate, practical relevance of the Upaniṣads in navigating the psychological and existential challenges of contemporary human life.

  • The Horizon of Healing:

Dr. Mahadevan Seetharaman (Dean of the California College of Āyurveda) mapped out a visionary path for The Future of Āyurveda in the United States, highlighting how this ancient science of life is transitioning from an alternative modality to a cornerstone of holistic global wellness.

  • The HUA Journey:

President Shri. Kalyan Viswanathan shared an inspiring retrospective and future outlook on HUA’s growth, reminding the audience that a civilization survives not by sentiment alone, but through the deliberate building of world-class educational institutions.

When Philosophy Met Performance: The Richness of Saṃskṛti

True to the spirit of Hindu knowledge traditions where intellectual philosophy (Darshana) has always been intrinsically bound to aesthetic experience (Rasa), the evening was elevated by stellar cultural showcases:

  • Kathak in Hindu Saṃskṛti: The celebrated actress, director, and Kathak Guru Sushri. Archana Joglekar mesmerized the audience with an expressive performance, illustrating how classical dance serves as a visual, kinetic expression of sacred Hindu philosophy and storytelling.

  • Rhythms of the Farukhabad Gharana: Shri. Suryaksha Deshpande delivered a riveting Tabla solo, demonstrating the mathematical brilliance and spiritual depth embedded in Indian classical percussion.

  • A Choral Symphony of Sacred Sounds: Renowned composer and scholar Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran led a magnificent choir of over 20 local artists, filling the hall with a powerful, layered performance of Indian choral music that left the audience in a state of meditative joy.

Honoring Stewardship and Community Connections

The evening was graced by our Guest of Honor, Shri. Binaya Pradhan, the Consul General of India in New York. In his address, Ambassador Pradhan lauded the efforts of the Hindu University of America in establishing a rigorous academic home for Hindu thought in the West, emphasizing the vital role of cultural and economic diplomacy in connecting the global diaspora to its roots.

Like previous landmark Saṃvāda events in Houston and Los Angeles, the New Jersey gathering was ultimately a testament to the power of the local community. It brought together young professionals seeking dharmic principles for leadership, parents looking for meaningful ways to share heritage with the next generation, and dedicated donors eager to support the mission.

From Saṃvāda to Sankalpa: The Next Step

Our gatherings across the country have proven that our community is hungry for more than just passive heritage; we are ready for active, rigorous intellectual stewardship.

As we reflect on the success of the New Jersey event, we transition from Saṃvāda (dialogue) to Sankalpa (resolve). Building a world-class university requires a shared collective responsibility. We invite you to join this growing movement.

  • Support the Mission: To help us expand our academic programs, build our campuses, and secure scholarships for future students, please consider contributing to the HUA Annual Giving Campaign.
