Building on explorations of Charvaka, Nyaya-Vaisheshika, Jainism, and Buddhism, this independent session dives into five powerful traditions that shaped how generations have understood reality, the self, and freedom: Samkhya, Yoga, Purva Mimamsa, Vedanta, and Kashmir Shaivism.
 
Some of the deepest questions we wrestle with today are: What is real? Why do we suffer? How do we act with meaning? What does it mean to be truly free? 
 
One tradition offers a precise map of mind and matter and a path of clear discrimination. Another gives practical tools to still the mind and experience that reality directly. A third insists that right action and ritual, done with understanding, shape our destiny. Vedanta reveals a non-dual ground where the self and the ultimate are already one. And Kashmir Shaivism invites us to recognize that the entire universe is the vibrant, creative expression of consciousness itself, not something to escape, but something to awaken within.
 
These schools don’t agree. They argue with each other across time on whether the world is real or illusory, whether freedom comes through knowledge, action, or recognition, whether the absolute is still or alive with energy. Yet they share one goal: ending suffering and waking up to what is truly real.

In this course, five schools are examined: Sāṃkhya (systematic cosmological dualism), Yoga (liberation through disciplined practice), Pūrva Mīmāṃsā (Vedic authority, Dharma, and ritual efficacy), Vedānta (Advaita, Viśiṣṭādvaita, and Dvaita sub,schools), and Kashmiri Śaivism (Pratyabhijñā , liberation as recognition of Śiva,nature).
