Course Description

SAN1014 – (BGTS – Required Course) The Fourth and final Quarter of the Beginner Phase of the Bhagavad Gita through Samskritam enables students expand their grammar and use of the Saṃskṛtam language. By the end of this course students would have developed understanding of all cases. Students will also be able to employ future tense in sentences in addition to present, past and imperative forms. The grammar further expands with the introduction of prefixes, indeclinables, and more intricate verb forms such as ktvantam and lyabantam. The course will continue to cover ślokas and key philosophical messages from Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gītā. While the medium of introduction will continue to be English, significant use of Saṃskṛtam will be promoted. This marks the completion of the Beginner Phase of the Bhagavad Gītā and students will progress to the Intermediate phase courses.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gītā in the following areas:

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th cases.
  • Recognize indeclinables, prefixes, future tense as well as ktvantam & lyabantam forms.
  • Explain the meanings of ślokas in the 2nd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Synthesize Saṃskṛtam texts to explain meanings of ślokas in anvaya form.
  • Design complex sentences using all Saṃskṛtam cases and verb forms in present, imperative, past and future tenses.
  • Explain the key philosophical messages in the 2nd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā.

Course Content

In this course, the students will complete their learning of all the cases in Saṃskṛtam and employ them in sentences. This course will also enable students to develop their knowledge of additional verb forms such as future tense, ktvantam and lyabantam. Students will examine the use of prefixes or upasargas and the associated rules. This course will also enable students to employ basic visarga and anusvara rules to split complex words and examine the meanings of ślokas from chapter 2. The course also enables students to understand the key concepts of karma and yoga from Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gītā.

Recognize Bhagavad Gītā as a Uttaramīmāṃsa text.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
