Course Description

SAN5103 - Sahitya I – Landscape offers an in-depth exploration of Sāhitya-śāstra, the science of literature, providing a strong foundation in various literary traditions. Students will learn to distinguish between Vaidika (Vedic), Ārṣa (epic and classical), and Laukika (transactional) forms of Kāvya (poetry) through the guiding principles of Sāhitya-śāstra. Key concepts of Kāvyaśāstra, including Chandas (poetic meters) and Alaṅkāras (poetic devices), will be examined to enhance literary appreciation and analysis. The course also explores the enduring value of ancient Kāvya based on Śāstra-based reasoning. Finally, students will apply their learning by composing poetic lines using these elements, fostering both creativity and scholarly insight.

DR. SOORYA HEBBAR

Dr. Soorya Hebbar holds a Ph.D. in Sāhitya and serves as a graduate faculty at HUA’s MA Sanskrit program. He is also an accomplished Aṣṭa̅vadha̅ni and Sa̅hityaka̅ra.

  • Memorize the notable and important aspects of Sāhityā-śāstra.
  • Compare the difference between vaidika, ārṣa and laukika kāvyāni using the rules of Sāhityā-śāstra.

  1. Deepen your understanding of Sāhitya-śāstra.
    • Building upon the existing knowledge of the student, this course will explore the intricacies of Sāhitya-śāstra in greater depth.
    • Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of its core principles, historical development, and various schools of thought.
  2. Refine your ability to classify and analyze Kāvya (poetry).
    • Building upon the existing knowledge of the student, this course will explore the intricacies of Sāhitya-śāstra in greater depth.Students will move beyond basic distinctions and learn to meticulously classify different forms of Kāvya using the refined framework of Sāhitya-śāstra.
    • This includes confidently differentiating between Vaidika (Vedic), Ārṣa (epic and classical), and Laukika (secular) poetry.
  3. Master the intricacies of Kāvyaśāstra.
    • This course takes the students through a deep dive into Kāvyaśāstra, the sub-discipline of Sāhitya-śāstra specifically dedicated to poetry.
    • Student’s will explore advanced concepts like Rasa (aesthetic experience), Dhvani (suggestion), and various Chandas (poetic meters) and Alaṅkāra (devices). Through in-depth analysis of classical works, you’ll develop a refined appreciation for the artistry and depth of Sanskrit poetry.
  4. Critically evaluate and defend Kāvya. 
    • This course goes beyond passive appreciation. The student will develop the ability to critically analyze Kāvya using the established principles of Sāhitya-śāstra.
    • The Student will learn to articulate the enduring value and relevance of ancient Kāvya in the contemporary world, drawing upon the wisdom of Śāstra for compelling arguments.
  5. Critically evaluate and defend Kāvya.
    • Theory meets practice! The student will gain the confidence to compose his own poetic lines in Sanskrit.
    • By applying the knowledge of Chandas (meters) and Alaṅkāras (poetic devices) acquired throughout the course, students will embark on a creative journey within the rich tradition of Sanskrit poetry.

Class Structure

Each MSV course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
