Course Description

SAN1032 – (BGTS – Required Course) The Second quarter of the Advanced Phase of Bhagavad Gita through Samskritam will continue to focus on more advanced grammatical concepts. At the end of this course the students, will be able to employ advanced concepts such as ṇatvam, ṇijantam, kṛtpratyaya, tarap-tamap and sati saptamī within their grammatical usage. This course will also continue to progress on the Bhagavad Gītā focusing on ślokas and concepts from Chapter 4 of the Bhagavad Gītā.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gītā in the following areas:

  • Apply grammatical constructs such as ṇatvam, ṇijantam, kṛtpratyaya, tarap-tamap and sati saptamī in sentences.
  • Create padavibhāga, anvaya kramaḥ and tātparyam of ślokas in the 4th adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Summarize the meanings of ślokas in the 4th adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā in Saṃskṛtam.
  • Detail the concept of renunciation and the qualities of a renunciant.

Course Content

In this course students, will enhance their grammatical understanding by learning the usage of Natvam, Nijantam, Kṛtpratyaya, Tarap-Tamap and Sati Saptami in their Saṃskṛtam communications. The course continues to examine the Bhagavad Gītā focusing on chapter 4 where students will perform the Anvaya translations and explain the concepts in Saṃskṛtam. The course also covers the concept of renunciation as discussed in the Bhagavad Gītā and students will be encouraged to explain the concept and attributes of renunciation.

Class Structure

There will be a minimum of 1.5 contact hours with one or more faculty every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 90 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes. During the course, students will be required to submit one short essay. They need not be academic quality papers – but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learnt and assimilated so far, and what has touched and inspired them deeply.
