Course Description

SAN1034 – (CSBG – Required Course) The Fourth and final quarter of the Advanced Phase of the Samskritam Through Bhagavad Gita culminates the grammatical studies of this course. At the end of this final quarter, students will be able to demonstrate understanding and usage of the grammatical concepts of sannanta, kārakam and taddhita pratyaya. Additionally, students will be able to perform the anvaya translations from Chapter 5 and 6 of the Bhagavad Gītā, and explain how the concept of self-control as articulated in the Bhagavad Gītā plays a role in modern society.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gītā in the following areas:

  • Demonstrate an enhanced grammatical understanding through applications of new concepts such as sannanta, kārakam and taddhita pratyaya.
  • Determine the padavibhāga, anvaya kramaḥ and tātparyam of ślokas in the 5th and 6th adhyāyas of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Describe the meanings in Saṃskṛtam of ślokas in 5th and 6th adhyāyas of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Correlate the teachings of self-control in the 6th adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā to modern life.̣

Course Content

In this course, students will expand their grammar to include sannanta, kārakam and taddhita pratyaya. The course will examine the Bhagavad Gītā concepts and ślokas from Chapter 5 and 6 through anvaya translations and articulation of the meanings in Saṃskṛtam. As part of this course students will also discuss and correlate how self-control is essential in the modern society and lifestyle

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
