Course Description

SAN1021 – (BGTS – Required Course) The First Quarter of the Intermediate Phase of the Bhagavad Gita through Samskritam will focus on more advanced language concepts, cases for complex word endings, conditional mood, usage and rules for adjectives. At the end of this course students will be able to read and write more complex sentences and texts in Saṃskṛtam. Students will also be introduced to the concept of translating poetic verses to prose in the form of anvaya and tatparyam thus enhancing their understanding and usage of Saṃskṛtam in written communications. This quarter covers Bhagavad Gītā ślokas from Chapters 2 and 3 and the meanings will be articulated in Saṃskṛtam (and English for clarifications).

Course Learning Objectives

In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gītā in the following areas:

  • Recognize and recall the cases for complex word endings and adjectives.
  • Employ conditional predicates.
  • Recall and examine Gītā concepts until the 2nd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Analyze ślokas from the 3rd adhyāya of Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Develop the basic concepts of padavibhāga (separation of words), anvaya kramaḥ (conversion of poetry to prose) and tātparyam (elucidation of meaning) for Bhagavad Gītā ślokas.
  • Recite ślokas from the 2nd and 3rd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā in anuṣṭubh and triṣṭubh chanda (poetic meters).

Course Content

In this course, students will understand how to decline words that end in complex into different cases. This course will also enable students compose more complex and intricate sentences in Saṃskṛtam using complex words and conditional predicates. The use of adjectives in appropriate places in accordance with stated rules will be covered in this course. In the Bhagavad Gītā, students will learn the technique of converting poetry to prose and uncover the meaning of the verses in chapters 2 and 3 of the Bhagavad Gītā. Students will continue to practice and employ this Padavibhāga, Anvaya and Tātparyam in subsequent courses in this program.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
