Course Description

SAN1022 – (BGTS – Required Course) The Second Quarter of the Intermediate Phase of the Bhagavad Gita through Samskritam course will continue to enhance understanding of Saṃskṛtam grammar and usage. At the end of this course, students will be able to employ potential mood, complex pronoun forms, ordinal and cardinal forms of numbers and enhanced vocabulary. Students will continue to analyze ślokas from Chapter 3 of the Bhagavad Gītā and will be able to derive the meanings from the text as well as gain an understanding of the philosophical messages from the ślokas.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course, students will be able to relate to words and expressions from the Bhagavad Gītā in the following areas:

  • Recognize and recall advanced pronouns and their cases.
  • Compose sentences using ordinal and cardinal numbers, and potential moods.
  • Summarize the meanings of ślokas in the 3rd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā in English.
  • Create the padavibhāga, anvaya kramaḥ and tātparyam of ślokas in the 3rd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Examine Bhagavad Gītā ślokas and explain their meanings in Saṃskṛtam.
  • Distinguish the concepts of yoga in Bhagavad Gītā adhyāyas 2 and 3.

Course Content

In this course, students will identify and examine the use of more advanced pronouns and how to decline them into different cases. One additional verb form covering the potential mood will be introduced in this course along with the usage of ordinal and cardinal forms of numbers. In this course, students will continue to examine the ślokas from Chapter 3 of the Bhagavad Gītā and examine the underlying message and concepts being conveyed through these ślokas. Students will also continue to perform Anvaya of the ślokas from Chapter 3.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
