Course Description

SAN1023 - (CSBG – Required Course) The Third Quarter of the Intermediate Phase of the Bhagavad Gītā through Saṃskṛtam course expands the students' grammatical understanding and usage of passive voice. At the end of this course, students will be able to employ more complex Saṃskṛtam in their verbal and written communication through use of passive voice and conditional mood. Students will continue to examine the ślokas from Chapter 3 and 4 of the Bhagavad Gītā, compose the meanings in Saṃskṛtam and explain the underlying concepts from these ślokas

Course Learning Objectives

In this course, students will be able to

  • Demonstrate an enhanced grammatical understanding through usages of conditional moods and passive voice.
  • Explain the meanings of ślokas in the 3rd and the 4th adhyāyas of the Bhagavad Gītā in English.
  • Synthesize padavibhāga, anvaya kramaḥ and tātparyam of ślokas in the 3rd adhyāya of the Bhagavad Gītā.
  • Collaborate to have discussions in the class in Saṃskṛtam based on ślokas and stories.

Course Content

This course will enable students to adopt the use of passive voice into their Saṃskṛtam communications. Students will also identify and apply conditional mood verb forms into their verbal and written communication. The course continues to examine the concepts of Chapter 3 and 4 of the Bhagavad Gītā with students analyzing and extracting the meanings of the ślokas and articulate in Saṃskṛtam.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).
