Course Description

HSF2301 – This course is the first of a 4 part series of the Bhagavadgita Certificate program. It launches a deep philosophical and psychological exploration of the opening four chapters of the Bhagavad Gītā. Beginning with Arjuna’s battlefield crisis, participants of "BG1: From Inner Conflict to Self-Knowledge" move from the shock of moral conflict to the liberating vision of the eternal Self, karma yoga (selfless action), and the integration of knowledge, action, and renunciation. The course deliberately interweaves classical Hindu philosophy (Sāṅkhya, Yoga, Vedānta) with contemporary psychological frameworks (CBT, ACT, positive psychology, trauma studies) to help participants resolve inner conflict, overcome attachment, and cultivate lasting equanimity in professional and personal life.

Course Content:

This course has been designed to enable the students to be able to:

  • Explain the philosophical distinctions between body, mind, and eternal Ātman(Self), and interpret Arjuna viṣāda yoga (Arjuna’s despair) as a universal psychological crisis of role conflict and attachment transforming moral confusion and decision paralysis into decisive, value-aligned action by understanding Arjuna’s crisis (Chapter 1).
  • Apply karma yoga principles (action without attachment to fruits) to real-life scenarios such as workplace stress, ethical dilemmas, or family disputes using structured decision-making templates developing unshakable resilience by internalizing the eternal, unchanging nature of the Ātman (Self) beyond body and mind (Chapter 2).
  • Compare and contrast the Gītā’s model of sthitaprajñata (equanimity, 2.55–72) with modern emotional-regulation theories (e.g., DBT, Stoicism) and break down how kāma (desire) escalates into krodha (anger) and sammoha (delusion) (3.36–43) and perform high-quality work without anxiety, preventing burnout and fostering intrinsic motivation (Chapter 3).
  • Evaluate personal or professional goals critically through the lens of svadharma versus paradharma (3.35) and explore whether true renunciation is internal detachment or external withdrawal (Chapter 4).

Class Structure:

There will be a minimum of 1.5 contact hours with one or more faculty every week for 11 weeks.

The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 90 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes.
