Course Description

SAN8107 – Jyotiṣa Advanced, which is the second of a two-part course series on Jyotiṣa, is dedicated to the study of mathematics in the Indian knowledge traditions using Līlāvatī. Jyotiṣa (astrology and astronomy), described as the eyes of the Vedas, uses mathematical calculations as tools for comprehending the planetary positions and interpreting their implications. The Jyotiṣa scholars were also expert mathematicians who made contributions to their field of study with their erudite treatises. The methodology and theories proposed by them are notable and one of the most renowned works in this area is the Līlāvatī, which through puzzles and riddles introduces mathematics to the beginners.

Course Learning Objectives:

In this course students will be able to:

  • Identify the key features of the ṣaṣṭi paddati (Indic mathematical system – base 60) used in Jyotiṣa, such as its use of positional notation or specific calculation methods (e.g., Vedic mathematics).
  • Explain the underlying principles behind the ṣaṣṭi paddati to demonstrate its relevance to Jyotiṣa in comparison to the principles used in modern mathematics (e.g., differences in notation, emphasis on geometry vs. algebra).
  • Apply specific techniques of Vedic mathematics (or another chosen method from Indic mathematics) to solve mathematical problems.
  • Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Indic mathematical system for solving a particular type of problem compared to modern mathematical approaches.

Course Content

❖Śaṣṭi Paddhati and Vedic Mathematics

This course introduces students to the Śaṣṭi Paddhati, an ancient Indic mathematical system based on base 60, exploring its theoretical foundations, historical significance, and practical applications in Jyotiṣa, through the text named Līlāvatī.

❖Key Features:

  • Positional Notation: Understanding how numbers are represented in base 60 compared to the more familiar base 10 system.
  • Vedic Mathematics Techniques: Introduction to key sūtras (formulas) for rapid mental calculations.
  • Historical Context: Exploration of its use in astronomical and calendar computations in Jyotiṣa.
  • Comparative Analysis: Differences in notation, emphasizing cycles and divisions essential to Jyotiṣa.
  • Geometry vs. Algebra: Examination of the Indic system’s focus on geometric interpretations versus modern algebraic approaches.
  • Relevance to Jyotiṣa: Practical applications in predicting astronomical events and astrological readings.

❖Problem-Solving and Practical Applications:

  • Vedic Sūtras in Arithmetic and Algebra: Application of ancient techniques in solving numerical and geometric problems.
  • Hands-on Practice: Solving calculations related to Jyotiṣa using Śaṣṭi Paddhati.
  • Comparative Exercises: Solving the same problems using both Vedic and modern mathematical methods to highlight efficiency and differences.

❖Critical Evaluation:

  • Strengths: Examining the efficiency, historical significance, and alignment with Jyotiṣa.
  • Weaknesses: Discussing challenges in applying Śaṣṭi Paddhati in contemporary contexts.
  • Comparative Analysis: Evaluating speed, accuracy, and usability of Vedic versus modern mathematical techniques.

Class Structure

Each MSV course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
