Course Description

SAN7106 – Mimamsa Basic introduces students to the foundational principles and methodologies of Pūrva-Mīmāṃsā, the classical Indian school dedicated to interpreting and applying Vedic texts. Students will explore the ṣaḍaṅga, the six auxiliary disciplines essential for understanding the Vedas, and learn vyākhyāna-paddhati, the structured interpretative techniques used by Mīmāṃsā scholars to derive meaning from Vedic injunctions. The course covers key concepts such as abhidhā (direct meaning) and lakṣaṇā (implied meaning), along with debates on Vedic authority and the purpose of rituals. Through textual analysis and practical exercises, students will gain critical insights into how Mīmāṃsā shaped Indian hermeneutics, philosophy, and linguistics. By the end of the course, learners will be able to apply Mīmāṃsā principles to the study of Vedic texts and broader ethical and philosophical questions.
