SAN6101 - Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika Basic course delves into the profound philosophical systems of Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika, exploring their foundational concepts, historical development, and unique methodologies. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of their key doctrines, including the nature of reality, epistemology, and logic. The curriculum covers central ideas such as pramāṇa (means of knowledge), categories of reality, pañcāvayava-nyāya (five-part syllogism), and atomism. It also explores the role of God, soul, and liberation in metaphysics. By examining the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika's systematic approach to knowledge and argumentation, students will develop critical thinking skills and appreciate the enduring relevance of these ancient Indian philosophies in contemporary philosophical discourse.

In this course, the students will:

  • Define basic concepts and terminology of Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika philosophies, understanding their foundational elements.
  • Describe the historical development of the Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika schools, including their merger and influence on Indian thought.
  • Analyze Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika’s methods of argumentation, knowledge, their structure and significance.
  • Evaluate the relevance of Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika’s cognitive-centric approach in modern philosophical discussions.

Module 1: Introduction to Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika

    • The theory of causation and its implications
    • The concept of time and its relation to change

Module 4: Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika and Modern Philosophy

  1. Cognitive Science and the Theory of Perception
    • Comparing Nyāya’s theory of perception with modern cognitive science
    • The role of inference in scientific inquiry
  2. Logic and Formal Systems
    • Analyzing the similarities and differences between Nyāya logic and modern formal logic
    • The relevance of Nyāya’s dialectical method in contemporary philosophy

Class Structure

Each MAS course comprises 45 hours of teaching and with 2 quizzes and 2 assignments. The number of assignments and quizzes change subject to faculty discretion. Final exams for all courses conducted at the end of the semester.
