Varna, Jati, and Caste:
Reclaiming Clarity in Hindu Social Thought
Recent Webinar: Sunday, January 11, 2026, 9:00 am PT / 12:00 pm ET / 10:30 pm IST
About the Webinar:
Public discourse often collapses the distinct Hindu concepts of varna and jati into the modern idea of “caste,” leading to widespread misunderstanding, misrepresentation, and confusion.
This webinar seeks to restore conceptual clarity by carefully distinguishing these terms within their proper historical, philosophical, and civilizational contexts. We’ll begin to unpack how the modern “Caste System” was constructed and challenges the misconceptions that burden Hindu communities worldwide. We will also introduce the full course called Distinguishing Varna & Jati from Caste, taught by Shri. Kalyan Viswanathan, President of HUA.
This special webinar features Kalyan Ji, leading the conversation and continuing the Samvada in Los Angeles. Building on the spirit of Samvada, this session will not only address critical intellectual questions, but also articulate a broader vision for strengthening Hindu scholarship, dialogue, and institutional growth.
As we begin a new year, this webinar invites students, scholars, and supporters of HUA to engage with foundational ideas that shape Hindu society while also reflecting on HUA’s mission to offer rigorous, authentic, and transformative Hindu Studies for the world. Join us to start the year grounded in clarity, purpose, and collective resolve.
