Course Description

HSF2001 – Darshana 1– Introduction to Hindu Philosophy course is first part in a two-part series which introduces students to the epistemological and logical foundations of Indian philosophy through five classical Darśanas. The course examines three heterodox (Nāstika) schools, Cārvāka, Jainism, and Buddhism, followed by two orthodox (Āstika) schools, Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika. Students engage the central Indian philosophical framework of Pramāṇa (valid means of knowledge) and trace how each school's epistemological commitments generate a distinctive metaphysics, ethics, and vision of liberation.  This course is one of two mutually independent yet naturally complementary offerings in the Darshana series. Building on the foundations established in Part I, the second course explores the systematic philosophies of Samkhya and Yoga, as well as Purva Mimamsa and the inquiry of Uttara Mimamsa (Vedanta), along with Kashmiri Shaivism.

Course Content

This course orients students to the concept of Darśana, the Vedic intellectual context, the Āstika/Nāstika distinction, and the shared Pramāṇa framework. It examines the three Nāstika schools: Cārvāka’s materialist rejection of all knowledge beyond perception; Jaina epistemological pluralism (Anekāntavāda, Syādvāda); and Buddhist metaphysics (Anattā, Pratītyasamutpāda, Mādhyamaka, Yogācāra). It also examines Nyāya’s science of logical reasoning , including the five, membered syllogism and natural theology , and Vaiśeṣika’s categorial ontology and atomic metaphysics. Week 11 is devoted to student presentation.

Class Structure

The course is designed as 2 parts

Darshana 1: Introduction to Hindu Philosophy

This course introduces the foundational streams of Indian philosophical thought, beginning with the heterodox traditions of Charvaka, Jainism, and Buddhism before transitioning into the early orthodox schools of Nyaya and Vaisheshika.

Darshana 2: introduction to Hindu philosophy

This course will explore systematic philosophies of Samkhya and Yoga, Purva Mimamsa and the inquiry of Uttara Mimamsa (Vedanta) and Kashmiri Shaivism.

Each part will span 1 Quarter, with 1 online session per week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. During the course, students will be required to submit one short essay. They need not be academic quality papers – but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learnt and assimilated in the course.

Each part is independent of the other and can be taken in any sequence.
