This course covers Sāṃkhya, its dualism of Puruṣa and Prakṛti, 25 tattva cosmology, Satkāryavāda, and atheistic Mokṣa, and Yoga, which translates Sāṃkhya metaphysics into the eight,limbed (Aṣṭāṅga) path toward Kaivalya. It examines Pūrva Mīmāṃsā’s philosophy of Vedic language, Dharma, and intrinsic validity of knowledge (Svataḥprāmāṇya). It engages the three Vedānta sub,schools on Brahman, Māyā, Jīva, and Mokṣa. Course also examines Kashmiri Śaivism’s Pratyabhijñā tradition, Śiva as absolute freedom (Svātantrya), the 36 Tattvas, the three Malas, Śaktipāta, and liberation as recognition. Week 10 synthesizes all ten schools.
The course is designed as 2 parts
Darshana 1: Introduction to Hindu Philosophy
This course introduces the foundational streams of Indian philosophical thought, beginning with the heterodox traditions of Charvaka, Jainism, and Buddhism before transitioning into the early orthodox schools of Nyaya and Vaisheshika.
Darshana 2: introduction to Hindu philosophy
This course will explore systematic philosophies of Samkhya and Yoga, Purva Mimamsa and the inquiry of Uttara Mimamsa (Vedanta) and Kashmiri Shaivism.
Each part will span 1 Quarter, with 1 online session per week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. During the course, students will be required to submit one short essay. They need not be academic quality papers – but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learnt and assimilated in the course.
Each part is independent of the other and can be taken in any sequence.
