Course Content

Ramcharitmanas, written by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century, is the most popular vernacular version of the Ramayan, composed in Awadhi, a colloquial dialect of Hindi. Sundarakand, the fifth chapter, narrates Hanuman’s adventures as he searches for Devi Sita on Lord Rama’s command. He discovers her in a secluded grove on the island of Lanka, confronts Ravana and his forces, and returns to report back to Lord Rama, initiating the battle preparations. Tulsidas’s Sundarakand not only recounts the tale but does so in a captivating poetic style, offering profound messages, rich symbolism, and philosophical insights.

We will use the following themes in our study:

  • Hanuman’s leap – courage, self-surrender, and transcending barriers
  • Meeting Sita – Bhakti, Humility, Reassurance
  • Lanka Darshan – Contemplation of dharma and adharma
  • Ravana’s court – Vairagya and wisdom
  • Return Journey – Accomplishment, Faith, Divine praise

Class Structure

The course is a 90-minute weekly class hour with a 75-minute chanting/lecture interaction and 15-minute Q&A, pertinent to the course content. Students’ evaluation will be tri-weekly on the level of their ability to chant and understand the meaning of the slokas.
