This course is divided into two main parts. In part 1 (weeks 1–6), we shall go through the important six parts (kandas) of Valmiki Ramayana – (1) Bala Kanda (Childhood of Rama), (2) Ayodhya Kanda (Exile of Rama), (3) Aranya Kanda (Abduction of Rama’s wife Sita by Ravana), (4) Kishkinda Kanda (Rama’s partnership with Sugreeva & Hanuman), (5) Sundar Kanda (Hanuman Successfully finds Sita), (6) Yudh Kanda (Battle of Dharma between Rama & Ravana). In these first 6 weeks, we will understand various characters of Valmiki Ramayana and their interplay in the story and evaluate different situations, relationships, characters, incidents of Valmiki Ramayana and observe and understand the eternal message hidden in each of them.
In part 2 (weeks 7-8), we shall discuss and debate around different nuances around the historicity of Ramayana, dating of Ramayana & Science behind various seemingly magical looking incidents of Ramayana
On the last 2 weeks we shall have a detailed revision of all the an extensive online quiz for all the participants.
There will be a minimum of 1 contact hour with the faculty every week for 6 weeks. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. The class will meet twice a week for 90 minutes for 6 consecutive weeks.
During the course, students will be required to submit two short essays and or presentations. They need not be academic quality papers – but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learnt and assimilated so far. Quizzes will be part of LIVE class sessions and home assignments, so that students can assimilate all the facts of great epic of Ramayana
