This course begins with an introduction to Shiva and the philosophical foundations of Shaivism, exploring the symbolism and attributes associated with Shiva. Students will examine the mythological background of the Shiva Tandava Stotram, including the story of Ravana and references from the Ramayana and the Shiva Purana. The course includes a detailed verse-by-verse study of the stotram, highlighting themes such as devotion, cosmic energy, destruction, and renewal. Special attention will also be given to Sanskrit pronunciation, chanting techniques, poetic meter (Chhanda), Panchamaram meter compositions, and the use of alankara (figures of speech) and imagery.
The course further explores the philosophical dimensions of Tandava, Shiva’s cosmic dance, and concepts such as time (Kala), ego, and liberation. Students will study Shiva as Nataraja through the lens of temple traditions, art, and selected connections to modern scientific thought. In addition, the course introduces practical aspects of recitation, rhythm, and expression, along with an overview of the musical and dance traditions associated with the stotram, enabling participants to appreciate both its intellectual depth and performative richness.
