Course Description

SAN0002 – (MCSS – Required Course) The second course of the Micro Certificate in Spoken Samskritam (MCSS) will primarily focus on the developing the ability to comprehend simple sentences in Saṃskṛtam. Through practice using English translations, students will gain the skills to identify the genders and forms of nouns, pronouns, and verbs in singular, dual, and plural. They will expand their vocabulary by reading simple written conversations in Saṃskṛtam. By the end of this course, students will be able to construct complex sentences using various parts of speech and engage in short conversations. The medium of instruction for this course gradually transitions from English to Saṃskṛtam, ensuring a comfortable learning experience for students worldwide.

Smt. Parvathi Sriram

Parvathi is a Physical Therapist by profession and practiced in India prior to moving to Houston. Her area of interests are Sanskrit and Vedanta. She is currently teaching Sanskrit for Arsha Vidya Bhaarati students. She has also been teaching at Balavihar, Chinamya Mission Houston since 2015. Parvathi has been studying Vedanta at Chinmaya Mission Houston since 2014. She also continues her Sanskrit learning at AVB and through Samskrita Bharati.

Dr. Suryanarayana Nanda holds a Ph.D. in Sanskrit from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar, as well as an M.A. and M.Phil. from Delhi University, and Sahityācārya from S. Jagannatha Sanskrit Visvavidyalaya, Puri.

  • Construct complex sentences involving multiple parts of speech.

Course Content

In this course, students will develop their pronunciation skills by reciting simple Saṃskṛtam verses and understanding basic Saṃskṛtam sentences. They will expand their vocabulary by learning about months, seasons, colors, tastes, household items, clothing, and more. Additionally, students will gain proficiency in using nouns and pronouns correctly in terms of gender and number. Students are given dialogues in English that they collaborate with their classmates to translate into Saṃskṛtam. They will have the opportunity to practice simple conversations during class, and explore the different parts of speech and prepositional phrases in all three genders and numbers. Finally, students will progress to composing complex sentences with multiple parts of speech.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of valuable contact time with the faculty once a week. The class has been meticulously structured to foster effective learning in an engaging online face-to-face format. Furthermore, the curriculum is thoughtfully designed to build upon the knowledge acquired in previous classes. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with their peers outside of class, working together to successfully complete group assignments and engaging activities.
