Course Description

TAT3212 – This course is the first in a two-part series offering an in-depth study of Vedanta Darshana through Śrī Ādi Śaṅkarācārya’s Tattvabodha. The text presents Vedanta philosophy concisely in a simple question-and-answer format, without long shlokas, making it accessible to learners of Sanskrit. Students will gain a clear understanding of core Vedantic principles, which provides a strong foundation for studying other key texts such as the Bhagavadgītā and for exploring broader Vedic philosophical systems including Yoga, Nyāya, and Mīmāṃsā. The course emphasizes both conceptual clarity and practical insight into the nature of the self (ātman) and ultimate reality.

Course Content

In this two-course sequence, the fundamental principles of Vedanta philosophy will be taught through the ‘Tattvabodha’ of Sri Adi Shankracharya. We shall cover about half of the Tattvabodha in the first quarter. Students will gain new insights into Vedanta philosophy. Many misunderstanding regarding Advaita Vedanta will be dispelled through proof from established texts.
Prior knowledge of Sanskrit or Vedanta philosophy is not necessary to take this course. A PDF file of each lesson with Devanagari and Roman script along with the word-meanings and brief
explanations will be shared with the students. Additional supplementary reading material will also be provided in PDF form.

There will be a minimum of 1 contact hour every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. The class structure is aimed to promote learning, self-study, reflection, and discussion every week.
