Course Description

TAT3214 –This course is the first in a two-part series offering an in-depth study of Upadeśa Sārah by Ramana Maharshi, a key modern text of Advaita Vedānta. Students will explore all 30 original Sanskrit ślokas, engaging directly with the text and its philosophical insights, with guidance from Prof. Dharmananda Dimri’s bhāṣyam to deepen understanding. The course introduces core principles of Advaita Vedānta, including the nature of the Self and the path of inquiry. It also connects these teachings with foundational scriptures such as the Upaniṣads and the Bhagavad Gītā. By the end, students will gain a clear and nuanced understanding of Vedāntic philosophy and develop the ability to interpret classical texts with greater depth and clarity.

Course Content

Upadeśasāraḥ, meaning “the essence of teaching,” is a concise yet profound work of only 30 Sanskrit ślokas by Ramana Maharshi. Despite its brevity, it offers a foundational understanding of Advaita Vedānta and presents practical methods for attaining moksha (liberation). In this course, students will study the depth and subtlety of these verses with the support of traditional commentary, particularly that of Prof. Dharmananda Dimri, to uncover their deeper philosophical significance. Part 1 of the two-course sequence, will focus on the first 15 ślokas.

The course explores core philosophical concepts central to Vedānta, including the limitations of karma in leading directly to moksha, while recognizing its preparatory role when performed as karma yoga. It emphasizes that ultimate liberation is attained through jñāna yoga. The teachings are grounded in Vedic sources, highlighting Ramana Maharshi’s alignment with traditional principles. Students will also examine key distinctions such as karma versus karma yoga and jñāna versus jñāna yoga, along with the role of spiritual practices like mantra, japa, pūjā, and prāṇāyāma in the journey toward self-realization.

Primary Texts:

1)Upadesha Sarah of Ramana Maharshi

2)Shri Dharmananda Dimri Bhāṣya.

Secondary Sources:

1)Other works of Ramana such as Ramana Gita.
