Course Description

HSF1403 – The practice of Sanātana Dharma encompasses two vital dimensions: Jñāna Kānḍa (knowledge) and Karma Kānḍa (application), with Vedamantra chanting acting as the conduit between the two. Bhagavān Ādi Śaṅkarācārya, in his Sādhana Paṃcaka, enjoins every spiritual aspirant to engage in daily Veda study (Vedo nityam adhīyatām), underscoring the significance of accurate chanting and comprehension of the mantras. Śri Śaṅkarācārya furthe emphasizes the importance of performing karma as prescribed in the Vedas (tadutim karma svanuśṭheeyatām). From time immemorial, the worship of Rudra/Shiva has inspired and given solace to innumerable devotees. In this course, the Laghu Nyasa, the method of embedding the Devathas into one’s own being, is taught. This will be followed by the Namaka Prashna from the Krishna Yajur Veda. It is said that one who worships daily with Namaka, Chamaka, and Purusha Sukta, will be honored in the highest Brahma LoKa.

Course Content

The deity Rudra is held as one without a second by the Vedas and the Upanishads (Eka Eva Rudro na dvitiya). He is the Father of the Universe (Bhuvanasya Pitaram), Lord of hymns (Gathapati), and Lord of Sacrifice (Medhapati). He is the best among physicians (Bhishaktamam). By worshiping Shiva, the devotee himself becomes Shiva! The course covers chanting of Rudra Namaka mantras from the Krishna Yajurveda, with special focus on svara (intonation). These are the mantras that are chanted in all Shiva pujas and yajñas at homes, congregations, and at temples. In a future course the Champaka Prashanta mantras will be taught.

Class Structure

There will be a minimum of 1 contact hour with the faculty every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. During the course, students will be required to submit one short essay of around 1000 – 1500 words, or videos of their practice. They need not be academic quality papers or professional videos – but should be based on students’ self-reflection on what they have learnt and assimilated so far.
