Course Description

SAN0102 - (SPVS - Required Course) The Second Quarter of the Beginner Phase of the Certificate in Sanskrit Proficiency for Vedic Studies, aims to further the skills of listening, reading, and writing Saṃskṛtam in Devanāgarī script. Throughout the course students will be introduced to basic Saṃskṛtam grammar, they learn to identify parts of speech in simple present tense, and will be introduced to verb forms in imperative moods. At the end of Beginning Sanskrit course, they will be able to read easy prose passages, recite simple Saṃskṛtam verses, and discuss their meanings. They will expand their vocabulary and use it to construct simple sentences.

Smt. Parvathi Sriram

Parvathi Sriram is a Physical Therapist by profession and practiced in India prior to moving to Houston. Her area of interests are Sanskrit and Vedanta. She is currently teaching Sanskrit for Arsha Vidya Bhaarati students. She has also been teaching at Balavihar, Chinamya Mission Houston since 2015. Parvathi has been studying Vedanta at Chinmaya Mission Houston since 2014. She also continues her Sanskrit learning at AVB and through Samskrita Bharati.

Course Learning Objectives

In this Beginning Sanskrit course the students will be able to:

  • Utilize basic vocabulary to read Short Stories.
  • Identify nouns, pronouns, and verbs in simple present tense and imperative mood.
  • Recognize day and time in Saṃskṛtam.
  • Apply possessive nouns and pronouns in constructing sentences.
  • Memorize simple conversations using etiquette words.
  • Recite daily prayers, and understand their meanings in English.

Course Content

In this course, the students will be guided gently through the basics of Saṃskṛtam grammar. While enhancing their vocabulary, the students are also able to identify the genders of the nouns. The students learn the use of pronouns and are able to use them in forming simple sentences in singular and plural. They learn to recite short prayers and explore the meanings of the verses. They will learn basic vocabulary and etiquette words, and use them in greetings and introductions. They also explore the use of posssesive nouns and pronouns, and apply them in sentence construction. Throughout the quarter, the students continue to expand their vocabulary using materials designed to assist the students in practicing these skills.

Class Structure

Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The curriculum is designed to build upon the knowledge gained in previous classes. Regular homework assignments will provide valuable opportunities to practice the concepts covered in class. Successful completion of the course requires the submission of graded homework and the final Quarter End Exam (QEE).

This course is the part of the program-Certificate in Sanskrit Proficiency for Vedic Studies- Beginner Phase. We strongly recommend registering for the complete program consisting of 4 quarters.
