CPS7503 - (MA/DHS/ PHD) This course explores the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy in today’s turbulent world. Rooted in his religious tradition, Gandhi’s principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satyagraha (love for truth) became powerful tools of political and social transformation. Students will examine core Gandhian ideas such as Swaraj, Ram Rajya, trusteeship, Swadeshi, frugality, and social harmony, along with their application to contemporary issues like climate change, inequality, conflict, and women’s empowerment. The course critically evaluates the gap between Gandhian principles and their practical implementation, encouraging students to apply a Gandhian lens to modern policy, peacebuilding, and civilizational dialogue. Students will assess the philosophical foundations of Gandhi’s thought, trace the influence of global sociopolitical movements on his strategies, and explore Gandhian solutions to inter- and intra-state conflicts and other pressing global challenges.
