Course Description

CPS7506 - This graduate level course examines the concept and evolution of human rights, highlighting the limitations of dominant Eurocentric frameworks and introducing a Vedantic perspective rooted in Indian philosophical traditions. While modern human rights discourse gained prominence after the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the principles of practical Vedanta, as popularized by Swami Vivekananda, offer a deeper, value-based alternative. Vivekananda emphasized that Vedānta must address real-world issues such as poverty, illiteracy, exploitation, and discrimination—asserting that true peace requires transcending selfishness and embracing the world as one family (Vasudhaiva Kuṭumbakam). Students will explore the evolution of human rights, critique prevailing paradigms, and apply Vedāntic insights to current human rights issues and policies. The course encourages the development of a holistic, dharmic framework for justice, equality, and global well-being.
