Course Description

HSF3201 – This course is the first of a four-part series on Integral Yoga, a unique spiritual path aimed at the complete change and transformation of human life into higher and more luminous forms of consciousness as envisioned by Sri Aurobindo. The inherent drive of all life is the emergence of advanced consciousness. Humanity marks the point where this process is destined to become more and more spiritual. This course explores the future growth of humanity with regard to the ‘conscious evolution,’ as a psychological pathway designed for accelerated inner and outer development. The goal is a profound shift—a total reorientation and the attainment of a radically new state of awareness that currently is hidden from the ordinary human life. We will map out the psychological architecture of this transformation, highlighting the necessary conditions, effective techniques, common challenges, crucial realizations and inner insights that may help us on the way.

Course Content

This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the philosophical and spiritual framework of Integral Yoga laid out by Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. We begin by reviewing their lives, spiritual experiences and shared vision. The unique philosophy of Integral yoga is then compared with other major systems, showing their interconnectedness and complementarity in many aspects, as well as highlighting the unique aim of Integral Yoga – a divine life upon earth.
We then delve into the metaphysical architecture of existence, starting with the dynamics of creation. Two sessions trace the cosmic process of Involution (the Spirit’s descent into Matter) and Evolution (the subsequent re-emergence) and compares this metaphysical perspective to Darwinism and materialist theories. We establish the crucial difference: Integral Yoga views Consciousness as the primary reality and humanity as a transitional being and a complete spiritual transformation of Earth-life.
To map this process, we explore the Sevenfold Chord of Being, which provides the vertical structure of reality, and then translate this into the Parts of the Being clarifying the distinction between the outer Ego-governed instrument (body, life, mind), the enduring Soul, and the transcendent Central Being (Jivatman). The course concludes by focusing on the Soul and its vital role in the evolutionary process and clarify the role of rebirth and Karma in the light of Integral Yoga.

Purchasable Readings before the Course:
1. The Adventure of Consciousness by Satprem (free eBook provided by instructors the first day of class)

Class Structure

The course consists of 10 weekly sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, culminating in a final exam during the 11th week. Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The last 15-20 minutes will be allotted for Q and A session.
