Admission into a HUA Graduate program of study (MAH or DHS)
In this course, the students will:
In this course, students will use the book, Introduction to Research Methods: A Hands-on Approach, second edition (Sage, 2022) by Bora Pajo as the primary resource. Besides this textbook, we will use select articles and audio-visual resources, to be provided by the instructor. In the initial weeks the students will gain an understanding of the concept of research, purpose of research, and how to formulate a research question. After zeroing in on a research question they will review literature for that question. In the subsequent weeks, they will explore quantitative and qualitative research methods, and how to collect data (primary and secondary) for them. While collecting data they will take into account factors such as measurement error, reliability, validity, and sampling issues while collecting data. And after that, they will explore how to analyze data. In the final weeks, they will build on earlier weeks and focus on analyzing results of their research and discuss the findings from their research. In the last week, they will present their findings in the class.
There will be 3 contact hours with the faculty every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study, research and writing assignments each week. At the end of the course, students will be required to submit a short essay.
