Course Content

The course begins with the Kāraka Prakaraṇam, which introduces students to the six principal semantic roles associated with verbs: the doer, the object, the instrument, the recipient, the source, and the location or time. Emphasis is placed on how these roles determine the grammatical marking of nouns in sentences. Students practice identifying and applying these roles through sentence analysis and examples from classical texts, gaining a clear understanding of the interaction between verb meaning and noun case.

Next, the Vibhakti Prakaraṇam focuses on the case endings in Sanskrit, exploring their syntactic and semantic functions. The seven vibhaktis are studied in detail, with attention to their application to nouns, pronouns, and adjectives. Students learn patterns for general usage, as well as exceptions and optional forms, with exercises that involve both analysis of existing texts and the composition of new sentences to reinforce understanding.

The final portion of the course covers the Ajanta Puṃlinga Prakaraṇam, concentrating on अकारान्त akārānta masculine nouns. Students study how these stems are formed, how endings are applied, and how phonetic and morphological modifications occur during declension. The course explains the rules governing the proper construction and use of these nouns, enabling students to parse, analyze, and compose sentences accurately. Practical examples from classical Sanskrit texts illustrate these patterns and reinforce their correct application.
