Course Description

SAN3014 - Laghu-Siddhānta-Kaumudī – Beginner 04 focuses on the continuation of the Ajanta Puṃlinga Prakaraṇam, dealing with vowel-ending stems in Sanskrit nouns across all three genders—masculine, feminine, and neuter. This includes all vowel ending stems like ikārānta, ukārānta, ṛkārānta stems excluding akārānta masculine stems which were covered in the previous quarter. Students study the formation, modification, and declension patterns of these vowel ending stems, including vowel adjustments, suffix application, and phonological modifications. Emphasis is placed on understanding the systematic patterns of noun formation, the interaction of stems with case endings, and the accurate use of these nouns in Sanskrit sentences and in Sanskrit texts.

Course Content

The course begins with ajanta puṃlinga śabdāḥ (masculine vowel-ending stems), examining the formation of the stem, vowel modifications, and the application of case endings. Students study how the vowel at the end of the stem interacts with endings and how the stem may undergo changes to maintain phonetic and grammatical consistency. Practical examples from classical Sanskrit texts illustrate correct usage.

Next, the course explores ajanta strīlinga śabdāḥ (feminine vowel-ending stems), highlighting the differences in declension and modifications compared to masculine stems. Students learn the patterns for applying endings, vowel adjustments, and exceptions in feminine nouns, enabling them to use these nouns accurately in sentence construction and textual analysis.

The final portion covers ajanta napuṃsakalinga śabdāḥ (neuter vowel-ending stems), focusing on their specific formation and declension rules. Attention is given to phonetic changes that occur during stem-ending interactions with case markers. Exercises include parsing sentences with neuter nouns, applying appropriate endings, and composing sentences that reflect correct gender and case usage.

Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on recognizing patterns, understanding modifications, and applying rules consistently. Students engage with examples from texts to reinforce learning and develop proficiency in handling vowel-ending stems across all three genders in Sanskrit grammar.
