Course Description

SAN3105 - This course offers a deep exploration into the timeless wisdom of Bhartruhari, one of the most celebrated Sanskrit poets and philosophers of ancient India. Best known for his triad of century-verse collections — the Śṛṅgāraśataka (on love), the Nītiśataka (on ethics), and the Vairāgyaśataka (on renunciation) — this course will focus primarily on his Nīti Ślokas, which are a profound collection of maxims on moral conduct, social values, and human psychology. Through close reading and analysis of selected verses from the Nītiśataka, students will engage with topics such as leadership, friendship, integrity, wisdom, humility, and the nature of human behavior. The course will contextualize Bhartruhari's teachings within both the classical Sanskrit literary tradition and the broader Indian philosophical landscape.

Course Content

The course begins with an introduction to Bhartruhari, focusing on his life, philosophical background, and major literary works. Students will learn about the Śatakatrayam, the three celebrated collections of verses known as the Nīti, Śṛṅgāra, and Vairāgya Śatakas, which together reflect Bhartruhari’s moral, emotional, and spiritual insights.

The study then moves to selected verses from the Nītiśataka. Through these ślokas, students explore important ethical themes such as wisdom and folly, virtue and vice, honour, courage, and heroism. Further topics include reflections on wealth, destiny, action, benevolence, and patience, revealing Bhartruhari’s deep understanding of human behaviour and moral values.

Later sections of the course highlight themes of love and renunciation, presenting Bhartruhari’s balanced view of worldly life and spiritual detachment. Attention is also given to the poetic and aesthetic qualities of his writings, examining his use of language, imagery, and moral expression.

In the final part of the course, students engage in the recitation and memorization of selected ślokas, along with group discussions and critical reflections. These activities aim to develop both appreciation and understanding of Bhartruhari’s lasting contribution to Sanskrit literature and Indian philosophical thought.

Class Structure

The course consists of 10 weekly sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, culminating in a final exam during the 11th week. Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The class structure for this course is designed to foster learning, self-study, reflection, and discussion on a weekly basis.
