Course Description

TAT3206 – This Course is the first of the two-part course sequence that introduces Nyaya Darshana of Gautama Rishi systematically based on a text called Nyaya Sutras. Nyaya is one of the six Vaidika philosophies attributed to Gautama Rishi. Nyaya Darshana is extremely important because progress in any branch of knowledge cannot be made without a firm grasp on grammar and logic. It is said: काणादं पाणीनीयं च सर्वशास्त्रोपकारकम्। kāṇādam pāṇīnīyam ca sarvaśāstropakārakam. - Logic and Grammar are the pillars of all subjects. The students will experience this through the course.

Course Content

Nyaya Darshana’s first Chapter has two sections. The first Ahnika (chapter) has 41 sutras and the Second Ahnika has 20 Sutras. We shall divide the total 61 sutras into two parts and teach them in Nyaya Darshana Part-1 and Nyaya Darshana Part-2 respectively. Prior knowledge of Sanskrit or Nyaya philosophy is not necessary to take up this course. A PDF file of the main text with Devanagari and Roman script will be shared with the students. In addition, supplementary reading material will be shared in PDF form. Through this course, students will also get initiated into the Sanskrit language.

Class Structure

There will be a minimum of 1 contact hour every week. The class is structured in a way that promotes discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format, and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. During the course, students will be required answer one assignment at the end of the course. A model question paper would be provided quite early in the course so that the students can take guidance from the instructor if necessary.
