The course will cover the following modules-
Module 1: Introduction to the Sacred Temple
Introduces the temple as a sacred and living space, exploring its origins, meanings, and role as a bridge between the human and the divine.
It also outlines the philosophical foundations and basic principles of temple planning drawn from traditional knowledge systems.
Module 2: Evolution of Temples in India
Traces the development of temple architecture in India from early forms to classical styles.
It examines key phases, regional traditions, and the emergence of diverse architectural styles shaped by geography, materials, and patronage.
Module 3: Temple as a Living Experience
Explores the temple as an experiential space shaped by ritual, movement, and symbolism.
It highlights how architecture supports worship practices, festivals, and community life, making the temple a dynamic cultural institution.
Module 4: India and the World – Shared Heritage
Examines the spread of temple traditions beyond India through trade and cultural exchange.
It focuses on the transmission of ideas, practices, and architectural principles across regions, especially to Southeast Asia.
Module 5: Temples in Cambodia – A New Landscape
Introduces the development of temple architecture in Cambodia, exploring early civilizations, cultural interactions, and the adaptation of Indic ideas within local contexts.
Focuses on Angkor as the culmination of temple architecture and sacred planning.
It also reflects on the continued relevance of temple traditions in contemporary society, including their role in identity, culture, and the global diaspora.
The course consists of 10 weekly sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, culminating in a final exam during the 11th week. Students will have a dedicated 1.5 hours of contact time with the faculty each week. The class is carefully structured to facilitate effective learning in an online face-to-face format. The last 15-20 minutes will be allotted for Q and A session.
