In this course Sādhana Pañcakam, students will be able to:
There are many small Vedāntic texts called prakaraṇa granthas. Unlike the Upaniṣads, these texts deal with a specific topic that is related to the unfoldment of the identity of individual and the total, or the microcosm and the macrocosm. In this regard, several prakaraṇa granthas consisting of five, eight, hundred or thousand verses have been attributed to Ādi Śaṅkara. Among the texts with five verses the one which stands out is the Sādhana Pañcakam, also known as sopāna pañcakam. The wide appeal of this text comes from its systematic unfoldment of the means to liberation. The values presented in Sādhana Pañcakam are to be cultivated early in the enquiry of the reality of the self. The values make one ready to receive the knowledge. In the unfoldment of the values, the Vedāntic vision is also revealed and, in this regard, Sādhana Pañcakam is a complete text.
There will be a minimum of 1.5 contact hours with one or more faculty every week. This will consist of lecture for 75 min and a 15 min Q&A pertaining to the subject matter discussed. Class-room participation is encouraged.
