Course Content

Academic writing is an iterative process of clarifying one’s thinking, a discursive dance between inquiry and argumentation. Through a combination of close reading, practical exercises, peer review, and in-depth analysis, students will learn how to craft sophisticated theses that contribute meaningfully to scholarly inquiry and discourse within their field of study.

Emphasis will be placed on refining skills in argumentation, organization, and style, ensuring that students can effectively convey their ideas to academic audiences. Students will regularly practice these skills through ongoing reading, writing, and presentation assignments. By the end of the course, students will have further developed as writers and thinkers in the humanities and will have the skills and confidence to communicate effectively in this field.

Class Structure

The class will meet for one three-hour session each week. Sessions will be composed of short lectures, class discussion, small group workshops, individual workshops and one-on-one conferencing. Students are expected to keep up with reading and writing assignments in order to participate effectively in class.

Participation is a key component to this course. Students are expected to be on time for class; if a student is late for more than two sessions, they will be marked down by a half a grade for every late arrival. If a student is absent for more than two classes, they will have to retake the course. Students are expected to notify the professor at least 24 hours in advance of an absence.
