LAN0101 – Introducing the Sounds and Script of Sanskrit is a two-part course that offers a comprehensive introduction to Devanāgarī, the script of Saṃskṛtam, focusing on both its written form and phonetic structure. Students will learn the Sanskrit alphabet, including vowels, consonants, compound letters, and conjuncts. Emphasis is placed on phonics and correct pronunciation, guided by an understanding of the phonetic principles underlying the script’s evolution. By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to begin formal Saṃskṛtam studies at HUA.

Course Learning Objectives

In this course the students will be able to:

Understand the origin of various sounds in Devanagari.
Recite vowels and consonants with appropriate pronunciation.
Recite combination letters with appropriate pronunciation.
Recognize single and combination letters while reading.
List all single and combination letters, and the Saṃskṛtam numerals.
Apply single and combination letters in words and sentences.

Class Structure

It is a two-part course offered by the Hindu University of America, each part having 15 hours of instruction in English over a 10-week period (one quarter at the HUA). On successful completion of both the parts students will get 2-credits. There will be homework assignments and quarter-end-exams for this course.
