Course Description

LAN0100 - This two-weekend, online, live -only immersion course, ‘Introduction to Sanskrit Sounds’, introduces students to the sounds and script of Sanskrit in an engaging, interactive format. Through call-and-response recitation, color-coded handwriting, and melodious chanting, participants will learn precise pronunciation, breath control, and rhythm while memorizing the Sanskrit alphabet in Devanāgarī. Group practice and individual recitation ensure clarity, confidence, and instant feedback. By the end of the first weekend, students will be able to lead the class in reciting the full alphabet and reading simple words. The second weekend introduces Pāṇini’s grammar sūtras, Śiva Sūtrāṇi, and conjunct consonant rules, establishing a foundation for sight reading and further Sanskrit study. Course Content

In this course, students will develop a relationship with each letter of the Sanskrit alphabet through attention to mouth position, vocal strength, breath, and rhythm. Each letter will be handwritten in the Sanskrit script (Devanāgarī) using a unique color-coding system and accompanied by melodious chanting for ease of memorization. Vowel combinations with the alphabet are practiced in a call-and-response format, with each student also leading the class in recitation and reading simple words. This interactive format ensures active participation—students practice along with the instructor while muted and receive immediate feedback when unmuted. Group recitation fosters confidence and collective learning. By the end of the first weekend, participants will be able to recite and lead the entire alphabet with clarity and read simple words. The second weekend introduces Pāṇini’s grammar sūtras, Śiva Sūtrāṇi, and the rules for conjunct consonants, laying the foundation for sight-reading and grammar study.

Readings:

The students need to purchase the following material from American Sanskrit Institute.

  1. Intro to Sanskrit Lesson 1-  https://www.americansanskrit.com/shop/introduction-to-sanskrit-downloadable

Class Structure

Students will have 20 dedicated hours of contact with the faculty in two weekends. Three-hour sessions on Friday and 5-hour session on the weekends for 2 weekends. Commitment to the 20 live-only scheduled hours is required for all participants to maintain the momentum of learning as the curriculum accumulates and is dependent upon group interaction.

Students can choose to take only Part 1 for 1 credit or complete both parts to earn 2 credits. You must attend the first weekend, or part 1, in order to participate in the second weekend, or part 2.
