Course Description

YOG4000 – Most people think of yoga as something done on a yoga mat in a yoga studio, and mostly associate it with physical poses, asanas. Yet those from Indian background hear the term Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, etc. which may have nothing to do with mats and poses. Yoga is defined by the philosophy of yoga enunciated by sage Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. Patanjali provides the principles of yoga. The key point is that we are all instruments of the cosmic flow. By being true to our cosmic purpose (one’s own Dharma, SvaDharma) without reactivity, one serves the purpose of one’s life and becomes purified. Such purification enables one to be released from rebirth (Moksha) and through the process of inquiry divine the Ultimate Reality. Thus, yoga is not a set of practices, but living life with cosmic awareness that can be applied to every aspect of life. The principles of Yoga Sutras and approaches to cultivating the cosmic awareness will be the substance of the 'Masterclass in Yoga Concepts' course. Accordingly, in the inquiry spirit of yoga, attendees are encouraged to ask questions with a view to orienting their own lives towards yogic living.

Course Content

This course consists of 9 sessions of 3 hours each, a total of 27 hours. An additional optional session of 3 hours may be added based on attendee needs for further discussion. The Masterclass in Yoga Concepts course begins with an overview and line-by-line in-depth discussion of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which provides the context into the philosophy and principles of yoga.

Learning this is essential to understand the concept of existence and most importantly the concept of one’s duty (SvaDharma).  Following the study of Yoga Sutras, we go into discussion of the mechanism and approaches of yoga practices. This provides the perspective to understand the application of yoga in different types of practices: Hatha Yoga, Tantra Yoga, etc. It will be helpful for those who seek to become yoga teachers or yoga therapists.

For dissected and clear understanding of these yoga approaches, Power of Breath and Meditation are separated for discussion.

Following is a summary of the course content and schedule:

Accordingly, after each logical segment, there will be a pause for questions and discussions to ensure adequate comprehension for attendees.  Those seeking credits towards certification will be required to submit an essay whose topic will be provided.
